As Afak, we have a long-standing and strong relationship with Parlevliet & van der Plas (PP), Western Europe's largest fish processing company. Due to this partnership, PP entrusted us with the complete redesign and installation of the processing plant aboard the Helen Mary, the world's largest pelagic trawler.
The primary goal was to enhance production capacity and efficiency. To maintain quality, the fish needed to be processed, frozen, and packaged quickly and carefully after being caught.
We worked closely with PP to design the entire plant, from the RSW tanks where the fish are stored after being caught to the freezer room where the packaged frozen fish blocks are kept.
The processing starts with a vacuum system that transports fish from the RSW tanks to the water fish separators. In this stage, the fish are separated from the chilled water. They are then graded by size using a roller grader and, after this, manually checked for deformities. Any damaged fish are then removed from the production flow.
After inspection, the fish are stored in hopper bins before being transported to the vertical freezers. Each mobile feeding conveyor serves one of the four rows of freezers. The freezers are filled manually using the mobile feeding conveyor. After freezing, the frozen fish blocks are placed on the block conveyor belt, which transports them to the packaging area. Here, they are sealed, packed, and strapped in cardboard boxes.
After being securely strapped, each box is weighed and labeled with its weight. The boxes are then fed into a vertical conveyor and transported to the freezing hold, where they are stacked onto pallets and stored.
Together with PP, we improved efficiency in transporting, grading, freezing, and packaging fish, which has increased production capacity while keeping the fish fresh. We look forward to continuing this successful partnership.
